The Ealanta whisky that Glenmorangie distillery cooked up 19 years ago wasn’t stashed in a dark corner of the warehouse because it sucked. But head distiller Bill Lumsden didn’t know what he had going until he uncorked a barrel three or four years ago and “realized I’d created something different,” as he told The Scotsman.

Now the latest single-malt to emerge from the 170-year-old Scottish institution has been declared the best hooch out there by none other than Jim Murray, whose “Whisky Bible” is more or less the last word on the subject. Lumsden used virgin oak to age the Ealanta and hid the barrels, so they wouldn’t be used in a blend. Thirsty? A bottle will cost you $120, which not an unreasonable price for “borderline perfection,” as Murray said, MSN informs.
