Embattled Toronto Mayor Rob Ford was hospitalized Wednesday with a suspected abdominal tumor.
Ford, who is fighting to be re-elected after a series of drug-and-alcohol scandals, went to the emergency room after abdominal pains he had for at least three months had become worse in the past 24 hours, Humber River Hospital said in a statement.
“The tumor is in his abdomen, that’s our working diagnosis based on CT scan,” Rueben Devlin, a doctor and the hospital’s CEO, said at a news conferenceWednesday night.
Doctors will conduct a biopsy and other tests over the next several days, he said.
Ford’s brother, Rob, a city councilor, said the mayor complained of pain at breakfast Wednesday and went to the hospital after consulting his physician.
He described him as being “in good spirits” and thanked well-wishers during the news briefing.
