A family in Armenia’s northwestern city of Gyumri has told local media of the ordeal they went through on Sunday night when they had to call in police to deal with a drunken Russian military man who allegedly tried to break into their home.
The incident comes a year after a conscript of the local Russian military base made his way into a local family’s home and shot and stabbed to death all seven of its members, including a two-year-old girl and a six-month-old boy.
The alleged murderer, 20-year-old Valery Permyakov, is currently on trial and faces a life sentence.
In the latest case involving a Russian serviceman it is reported that the man may have knocked at the door to the Armenian family’s apartment by mistake.
Ruzanna Yeranosyan says that the soldier, whom later the Armenian police identified as 25-year-old Sergey Sudnikov, kept knocking at the door to their apartment, which is situated on the fourth floor of a residential building, demanding that they open it.
She said her husband then asked the Russian soldier to leave, but seeing that he wouldn’t, they called the police.
Shirak Province Prosecutor Raffi Aslanyan said that the man later explained that he mistook the building for another one and in fact wanted to see his fellow serviceman, who lives on the fourth floor of a nearby building. He said that Sudnikov, who was reportedly unarmed during the incident, returned to his unit after giving the explanations. Meanwhile, Armenian law-enforcement authorities will conduct an inquiry to see if there were any elements of crime in the incident.
