Paul McCartney has sponsored a Japanese sumo wrestling team.
The former Beatle paid to have the sleeve of his album ‘New’, which was released earlier this year, emblazoned on flags during the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament in the city of Fukuoka. “Bizarrely Macca really got into Sumo Wrestling when he first toured Japan (as a solo artist) in 1993,” his spokesman told NME. “He took his crew to one of the matches when they were over there recently and was explaining to everyone the rules and the scoring and how it all worked.”
McCartney also attended the finale this week (November 24). “The match they went to was like the FA Cup Final or Wimbledon of Sumo Wrestling,” his spokesman continued. “Between rounds traditionally dressed Japanese people were carrying ‘NEW’ album cover artwork on bamboo billboards around the stadium!”
