Ancient works by the masters of classical art continue to be discovered. A 500-year-old mural created by Leonardo da Vinci was found in Milan, buried beneath layers of paint on the walls of the Sforzesco Castle. The lost work is a mural of trees stretching up to a vaulted canopy, with one monochrome section (shown here) depicting a tree root that was stuck in rock at the base of the trees adorning the room. Researchers believe the work was done while Leonardo worked as a court artist for the duke of Milan, Ludovico il Moro, in the late 1400s. Restoration has been done with hand tools such as scalpels and hammers, but completing the project will require finer methods, including ultrasound scaling and laser instruments, MSN informs.
