DJ Sergey Vardanyan (a.k.a. Naughty Turtle) has been working on Naughty Sessions project with his friends and has organized several measures in various clubs of Yerevan.
The recent one took place in Yerevan Plaza, in Panorama Launge, where over 500 techno lovers had gathered.
Araratnews.am had an interview with the founder of Naughty Sessions, Naughty Turtle.
How did you come up with the idea of creating Naughty Sessions project?
After visiting the best clubs and music festivals in the world, I realized that I cannot find the same in Yerevan. Instead of complaining, I decided to initiate measures which I would love to go to myself and have a good time. As a result Naughty Sessions project was made and several talented DJs partook in it.
What is the key to Naughty Sessions’ success?
First of all, it’s the professional approach, which supposes serious attention to small details. We realize that our service is providing high-quality music, so we pay a huge attention to such things as lineup, which is clarifying the sequence. Attendees have to notice that the music becomes better with the change of each DJ, meaning, the next DJ is continuing the ‘story’ of the previous one. Paralleling with other parties of Yerevan clubs, where each DJ plays a different music, we can state that it is not professional.
Besides the artistic part, we pay attention to the technical part as well, such as lights and sound. We do not use the sound that clubs are providing, but we hire the best technologies for lights and sound.
There are many genres in electric music. Which one is yours?
Our style is techno and techno-house. This style is less developed in Armenia. Techno is intellectual electronic music, unlike commercial electronic music, which is more simplified, due to which it is widespread and club owners demand the same kind of music from DJs. But the problem is that it is of a low quality. Techno music is progressing in the world, because it is of high quality. People who attend clubs and listen to quality music, start demanding the same, which makes the owner be more meticulous about DJs.
How would you evaluate interests of people concerning club music?
There are people, who are not acquainted with electronic music and do not know the difference between techno, Trans and other types. But as soon as they hear it, they fall in love with techno and fall deep into its endless world. By the way, people, who visit clubs, are of all age groups and professions. There are people, who have no connection with this kind of music, but come and get ‘affected’.
This comes to proof that the music is of high quality, and no matter what specifications clients have, they still evaluate it.
Our parties are visited by more people than the area has space and that’s the reason we always pick bigger places. During the last measure, we thought we will have 300 visitors, but we had 7oo. This result makes me happy as demand also rises. Many of our fans have wrote to us that they want an open air party, so it might be so next time.
What are main differences between club parties organized in Armenia and abroad?
There are three main directions: club visitors, artists and technical solutions. Club culture is more developed in Europe and USA, as it is older and the society is freer than here, but we are on the right track.
We have many talented musicians, who are equally talented as best DJs of abroad.
Electric music is tightly connected with visual effects today. That field is less developed in Armenia, now we are working with visual artist, who will become a member of our team.
How did you start your career as a DJ?
It’s been few years that I’m playing and listening to electric music. Till then I used to listen to jazz and classical music. The first time I heard electric music was at my friend’s club, who was a DJ. My case was ‘Love at first sight’ or ‘Love at first sound’. After listening to it for few years, I acquired DJ equipment and started playing for myself. And you know the rest!
What plans does Naughty Sessions have?
Ideas are endless. We want to create a Label recording studio. Many of our DJs are composing music and this studio will give them a chance not only to write but also to record their compositions. We have a wish to develop ethnic music. I think the combination of ethnic and electronic music will be fantastic.
Our next goal is to export Naughty Sessions. We want to tour and play in best foreign clubs and festivals. Besides, we want to enlarge our team, and include DJs from Georgia, Russia and USA, making it international. We want to organize an electronic festival in Armenia and different other plans, which, hopefully will succeed.
