Federico Motka, an Italian journalist who was kidnapped in war-torn Syria nearly a year ago, has been released, arriving in Turkey late May 26.

Motka, 31, entered Turkey via the Akçakale border gate in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa.

He was greeted by Turkish army officials at the border and underwent a medical check-up at hospital. He was then brought to the foreigners’ office of a local police department.

Motka left Turkey for Italy early on May 27, reports said.

Back in mid-April, four French journalists, following 10 months of captivity in Syria, were released and also brought to Turkey before returning to their home country.

As the Syrian conflict enters its fourth year, the country has become a deadly place for journalists who are regularly kidnapped and murdered, human rights groups have said, Hurriyet informs.
