Congress pushes for sanctions on Russia

American lawmakers have condemned Russia for sending troops to the Crimean region amid a political crisis in Ukraine, calling for economic sanctions against Moscow.

The House of Representatives voted Tuesday evening on a nonbinding resolution that passed the House Foreign Affairs Committee last week condemning Russia’s deployment of troops, CBS News reported.

Russia sent hundreds of troops to Crimea after its parliament authorized President Vladimir Putin earlier this month to use armed forces “to protect Russia’s interests” in the region, where half of residents speak Russian.

The lawmakers also called for sanctions against Russian officials, banks, and other state agencies.

In the Senate, Sens. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Dan Coats, R-Ind., announced an agreement to support the current Ukrainian government and condemn Russian actions, according to the report.

The resolution will demand that Russia withdraw its forces from the Crimean Peninsula. It will also urge President Barack Obama to back Ukraine economically and suspend Russia from the G-8, among other measures.
