“The nomination of the presidential candidate must take place from the one-fourth of the total number of MPs,” she explained. “The candidate who receives at least two-thirds of the overall votes is elected president. If the President isn’t elected, a second round is held, which can be participated by all candidates of the first round. In the second round, the candidate who receives at least three-fifths of the total votes gets elected as president. If a president isn’t elected in this round also, a third round is held, where the two candidates who received the most votes in the previous round can participate. In the third round, the candidate who receives the simple majority of the MPs’ votes gets elected President of the republic.”
The newly elected President, however, will not assume the duties until the incumbent’s term in office is over. The incumbent President’s term ends on April 9, and the NA-elected 4th President will assume office at a special parliamentary session on the same day.
Hovhannisyan added that the PM and the government will resign on the same day.
As per Hovhannisyan, the parliamentary factions will present their candidates for PM, and the latter will be elected on April 17, at a special NA session, and by a majority of votes.
