Historical experiences show that big and powerful states had imperialistic tendencies. History also taught that there are no friends in foreign policy, but only interests. Hence, pursuing own interests is the responsibility of every country.
No matter how times have changed, the dictating side is always the strongest.
Forms of manifestation of force have changed only. They are often manifested in economic power, maintained colonial policy, when economic and cultural control is distributed and not territorial achievements of countries.
Major factor for western policy is the distribution of mainly American culture, more than expositions of variety of weapons and force. Investments of Western corporations in different areas have bigger role than the provided military support.
So, despite the fact that we are living in the 21st century, main language of diplomacy is the legal one, large states do not cease to pursue imperialistic goals. However, unlike others, in Russian case it is displayed in usage of force, tough policy. In case of US, highly questionable thesis of democracy establishment is put forth.
Ukraine is currently fighting against Russian imperialistic aspirations. Ukraine and other post-Soviet countries are seen as a part of Russian empire by Russian political elite, instead of subjects of equal relations.
However, the battle in Ukraine is not only against Russian, but any imperialism. Ukraine is the barricade against imperialism.
It is not accidental that the West’s initial reaction of Ukraine’s and Armenia’s refusal to join Association agreement was very inert and now Euromaydan imposes its decisions on the latters.
This is not democracy at all, not just in Ukraine, but abroad as well. Self-organization of the society, its creativity gives new values to citizens and evaluates their role in the state.
As one of my friends said recently, this can bring more powerful democratic values to New Europe, than was in Old Europe.
