Australian pastry chef Deniz Karaca scooped up third place, behind Italian winner Davide Comashi and Marike van Eurden of the Netherlands, at the 2013 World Chocolate Masters in Paris overnight.

The talented pastry chef has achieved the highest result of any Australian in the history of the prestigious competition, which attracted 19 of the world’s best patisseries, chocolatiers and chefs.

In addition, he won the Best Decorated Globe award, which is inspired by the world’s best wine regions.

Over the course of the three-day event contestants were required to create:

  • A chocolate showpiece
  • A chocolate layered cake
  • Dipped and moulded pralines
  • A decorated globe
  • A gastronomic chocolate dessert

It was a requirement of the compeition that each creation clearly exhibit the competition’s theme ‘architecture of taste.’

“It’s been a tough road, but I was really excited to get to Paris and show the judges and other contestants what Australia and the Asia-Pacific region has to offer,” Karaca, who is the executive pasty chef at Epicure’s MCG Culinary Centre, said.

To qualify for the global event, Karaca took part in a number of local and international competitions over a period of 12 months.

During this time, he won the 2012 Australian Chocolate Masters event, as well as the Asia-Pacific event in Taiwan earlier this year.
