US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov have met in Paris in an effort to forward the talks that may promise an end to the ongoing civil war in Syria. The meeting is taking place at the US ambassador’s residence in the French capital.
According to journalists’ reports, they were first invited to the protocol ceremony, where the two foreign policy vets shook hands and smiled radiantly at each other, before the US dignitary politely asked them out.
The flow of the behind-the-closed-doors ceremonial was suddenly changed when reporters were invited back in to film the beginning of talks. John Kerry informed the puzzled media this discussion of the Syrian peace process had been conceived several weeks before.
The US foreign chief then produced two potatoes from a big white box and presented them to the Russian minister amid an outburst of laughter. Reports say the potatoes looked like two big buns.
The meeting has continued in the absence of journalists, with UN/Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi expected to join the US and Russian state officials later on.
