Apple has admitted a number of iPhone 5S models have battery drain issues which they have had to replace.
Its latest smartphone is meant to have a significantly longer battery life than its predecessors but a number of models have a manufacturing defect that causes the battery to drain quickly.
Teresa Brewer, an Apple spokeswoman, told the New York Times: “We recently discovered a manufacturing issue affecting a very limited number of iPhone 5S devices that could cause the battery to take longer to charge or result in reduced battery life.
“We are reaching out to customers with affected phones and will provide them with a replacement phone.”
The handset went on sale on 20 September with improved battery life – up to 10 hours talk time and 250 hours on standby,
