Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said here Tuesday that Madrid’s economic reforms exemplify the kind of decisions Turkey must take in order to obtain acceptance into the European Union, an ambition that he said Spain will continue to support without reservations.
Rajoy and Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan presided in Ankara over the bilateral 5th High-Level Meeting.
Both leaders said relations between their two countries have no significant problems and that they seek growing collaboration in all fields.
Erdogan acknowledged in his speech how much support his country has had from Spain since Turkey first began seeking accession to the EU.
“The most relevant bond uniting Spain and Turkey is the European Union,” Rajoy said, recalling that Spain was finally admitted to the EU after “long and complex negotiations.”
Spain is aware of the complexities and frustrations that joining the EU entails, he said, but urged Turkey to keep working at it and to put in place all the reforms necessary to make it happen, Fox news informs.
