President Bronisław Komorowski has apologized for the Monday assault on the Russian embassy staged in Warsaw by a raving mob of ultra-right nationalists who hurled fire crackers, bottles and stones at the compound.
In his Wednesday radio message, the Polish president called the nationalist attack “an absolute scandal that cannot be justified.” “We can only say how sorry we are,” Mr. Komorowski added.
The president bemoaned the blow that the recent Independence Day march dealt to the country’s image worldwide.
The apology comes as the Russian foreign office yesterday handed a note of protest to the Polish ambassador in Moscow. The Polish foreign policy ministry said it had prepared a formal answer to Russian diplomats where they expressed their deepest regrets about the incident and hoped it would be smoothed over soon.
The regional court of the Polish capital has passed the first sentences on ruffians who participated in the nationalist ‘Independence March’ in Warsaw on Monday.
Press-secretary of the regional court Agneshka Domanska reported that two people have been convicted for insulting a policeman and violating his integrity. One of them will pay a fine and the other will do community service for six months.
